Historic
York, Inc. is a private, non-profit historic preservation
organization serving the City and County of York, Pennsylvania. We strive
to be a resource to the community on the issues pertaining to
historic preservation.
There have been many successful projects completed by Historic
York, Inc. during the organization’s history. The organization has
played instrumental roles in the preservation of the Cookes House,
the Willis House, the Kirk House, the Forry House, Cross Mill, the
Codorus Ironmaster's House and the one-of-a-kind Haines Shoe House,
all important buildings within York County’s built heritage. Most
recently, Historic York, Inc. assisted with the restoration of the
Hanover Junction Railroad Station and the Farquhar Park Bandstand
and has been very vocal on the preservation of Camp Security, a
Revolutionary War era archaeological site in Springettsbury
Township. Historic York, Inc. holds protective covenants on many of
its past projects to ensure that future generations can admire and
appreciate these treasures of York's past. Historic York, Inc. in
cooperation with the City of York administers a Facade Easement
Program offering dollars for exterior renovation of historic center
city buildings in exchange for an easement on their facades. In
total, Historic York, Inc. holds easements on sixty properties
around the county.
As other historic resources in York become threatened, Historic
York, Inc. serves as a community voice for the protection of
historic buildings and sites. We lobby public officials to evaluate
existing ordinances and laws for methods to preserve the buildings.
We work with owners to look at alternatives to demolition. We look
for new owners interested in preserving archaeological sites and
buildings when current owners cannot. When all other efforts are
exhausted, Historic York, Inc. salvages the architectural pieces
for resale in its Architectural Warehouse. Its inventory includes
shutters, doors, windows, mantels, hardware, and lighting fixtures
that might otherwise be lost to a landfill. When a building cannot
be saved, at least other property owners can use its pieces in
their renovation and rehabilitation efforts.
Over the years, Historic York, Inc.'s staff has assisted thousands
of people with their renovation questions. From suggesting historic
paint colors to guiding property owners through the Rehabilitation
Investment Tax Credit Program, Historic York, Inc. is a strong
advocate of the concept that historic preservation in York makes
excellent economic sense. As public awareness of land use issues
grow, one solution becomes clear: we can preserve our green space
and reinvigorate our urban areas through the creative, adaptive
re-use of abandoned historic buildings.
Historic York, Inc. provides the technical expertise, the
motivation and the inspiration to preserve York's architecture. We
can’t do all this work without the financial help of our local
friends, supporters and members. Please consider joining Historic
York, Inc.
Thank you for your support.
